Neurodegenerative disease in general

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, are the most common causes of dementia, a major health problem in Western countries. The majority of patients (> 90%) suffer from the common, multifactorial disease forms, but many rare familial forms, caused by inherited single-gene defects, are also known. In this project, we aim to 1) identify genetic factors that predispose to the common forms of neurodegenerative disorders at the population level and 2) gene defects that cause rare familial disease forms. Furthermore, the effect of the genetic factors on tissue level is being studied in brain sections of the patients. The study is expected to identify key molecules and mechanisms involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. This may enable the development of diagnostics, treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders.
