Research Abstract


Since 2008, supported by FAS, the Aging Research Center (ARC) has established and successfully developed a Graduate School for Aging Research with a public health and psychosocial profile. With this application we aim to enrich the school with new competence, topics, and initiatives and to strengthen the methodological aspects as well as international exchanges. From the beginning the school has been a collaborative project with CASE at Lund University, the other FAS center devoted to aging, and two strong research groups at KI, the Division of Occupational Therapy and the Alzheimer Disease Center. In this proposal we expand our collaboration to include EpiLife FAS center in Gothenburg and Swedish Brain Power, the national network on neurodegeneration. We will use our respective competencies to offer students integrated educational plan with a substantial multidisciplinary interaction and an internationally high level of teaching. Further, we have the common goal of strengthening our National Platform for Graduate Studies in Ageing Research with a website that will be launched in 2013. As ARC’s school is active and well-functioning, we can immediately implement the educational program. Each year we will offer weekly seminars, twice a month journal clubs, monthly breakfast meetings, 5 international forums, 3-4 one-week intensive courses and 1 international workshop. Activities will take place mainly in Stockholm and Gothenburg, but also at other universities in Sweden and abroad. All events will be announced on the centers’ homepages, on the National Platform, and in a newsletter. This proposed school is of critical importance because aging research is a relatively young discipline, and as such, faces multivariate challenges. Engaging senior scientists from a wide variety of disciplines in an educational program will form a new generation of strong and internationally competitive Swedish researchers in the emerging field of aging and health.
