{"id":20917,"date":"2019-01-02T16:31:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/?p=20917"},"modified":"2019-01-02T16:31:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:31:31","slug":"moderate-to-high-intensity-exercise-does-not-slow-cognitive-decline-in-people-with-dementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/es\/2019\/01\/moderate-to-high-intensity-exercise-does-not-slow-cognitive-decline-in-people-with-dementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Moderate to high intensity exercise does not slow cognitive decline in people with dementia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Moderate to high intensity exercise does not slow\u00a0cognitive impairment in older people with dementia, a trial\u00a0published by\u00a0<em><strong>The BMJ<\/strong><\/em> finds.\u00a0The view that exercise might slow cognitive decline has\u00a0gained popularity, however, recent reviews of trials of\u00a0exercise training in people with dementia have shown\u00a0conflicting results.<\/p>\n<p>A team of UK researchers decided to estimate the effect of\u00a0a moderate to high intensity aerobic and strength exercise\u00a0training programme on cognitive impairment and other\u00a0outcomes in people with dementia.\u00a0494 people with mild to moderate dementia living in the\u00a0community across 15 regions of England were involved.\u00a0Participants were randomly assigned to either a supervised\u00a0exercise and support programme or to usual care.\u00a0The main outcome was an Alzheimer&#8217;s disease assessment\u00a0score (ADAS-cog) at 12 months. Other (secondary)\u00a0outcomes included activities of daily living, number of falls,\u00a0and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Compliance with exercise was good and participants were\u00a0assessed again at six and 12 months.\u00a0The researchers found that cognitive impairment declined\u00a0over the 12-month follow-up in both groups.\u00a0The exercise group showed improved physical fitness in\u00a0the short term, but higher ADAS-cog scores at 12 months\u00a0(25.2 v 23.8) compared with the usual care group,\u00a0indicating worse cognitive impairment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper:\u00a0<a
