{"id":4802,"date":"2015-03-03T13:47:21","date_gmt":"2015-03-03T13:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/?p=4802"},"modified":"2015-03-03T16:31:48","modified_gmt":"2015-03-03T16:31:48","slug":"young-leaders-from-across-europe-join-global-search-for-dementia-cure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/fi\/2015\/03\/young-leaders-from-across-europe-join-global-search-for-dementia-cure\/","title":{"rendered":"Young leaders from across Europe join global search for dementia cure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Some of Europe\u2019s brightest young leaders in research into dementia gathered in London on 27th February 2015 as part of a series of workshops to\u00a0discuss innovative ideas to address the disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 50 young experts in fields such as neurology, psychiatry, cellular biology and sociology gathered for a series of discussions and workshops looking at how to help people with dementia live independently for longer and what needs to be done to find a cure. The experts were from 19 countries including the UK, The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia and Belgium.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DELEGATE-LIST.pdf\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0for a list of the Young Leaders who attended the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was\u00a0hosted at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by the UK Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/world\/organisations\/uk-science-and-innovation-network\">Science and Innovation Network<\/a> in partnership with the <a title=\"World Dementia Council announce drive to speed up dementia research and increase investment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/2014\/09\/world-dementia-council-announce-drive-to-speed-up-dementia-research-and-increase-investment\/\">World Dementia Council <\/a>and the Global Action Against Dementia programme, which were established after the UK Government hosted the 2013 G8 Summit on Dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The young leaders were\u00a0joined by members of the World Dementia Council, which was set up to provide global leadership on tackling the key dementia challenges. The event was\u00a0also supported by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpnd.eu\">EU Joint Programming Initiative on Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND) <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimer-europe.org\">Alzheimer Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Flickr slideshow below courtesy of UK Foreign &amp; Commonwealth Office, under Creative Commons licence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/foreignoffice\/16456757927\/in\/album-72157648732148624\/player\/\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This was the fourth in a series of workshops for young leaders organised by the Science and Innovation Network to support global efforts to achieve the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/2013\/12\/agreements-from-g8-summit-on-dementia\/\">2013 G8 Summit Declaration commitments<\/a>. \u00a0Previous Young Leaders workshops have taken place in the USA,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/world-location-news\/young-canadian-innovators-to-discuss-dementia-action\">Canada<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.fco.gov.uk\/nicolearbour\/2015\/02\/17\/global-young-leaders-in-dementia-japanese-event\/\">Japan<\/a>\u00a0with the aim to create a global network of future young leaders which will continue to address the challenges presented by dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations and outcomes of these workshops will be presented at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/events\/meetings\/2015\/global-action-against-dementia\/en\/\">World Health Organisation\u2019s First Ministerial conference on Dementia on March 16-17 in Geneva, Switzerland<\/a>. \u00a0At the same time, the global Young Leaders Network will sign up to supporting future activities of the Global Action Against Dementia and the World Dementia Council.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Robin Grimes, FCO Chief Scientific Adviser said:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cInternational science and innovation collaboration is critical to deliver the commitment made at G8 to identify a cure or a disease-modifying therapy for dementia by 2025. This and other young leaders events will make a major contribution by bringing together the best young minds across a range of scientific backgrounds to encourage new ideas and foster new opportunities for innovation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Philippe Amouyel of the EU Joint Programme on Neurodegnerative Diseases said:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe scale of the dementia challenge demands a global response, beyond G7 countries. This latest young leader workshop is importing new perspectives and innovative ideas from all over Europe and beyond to tackle the dementia challenge. By harnessing the collective brains of these ambassadors of research we ensure the future of dementia research remains bright, efficient and globalised\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Working in association with the meeting organisers and Alzheimer Europe, JPND member countries actively identified and partly-supported the participation of Young Leaders in the workshop.
