{"id":6756,"date":"2017-01-12T08:50:52","date_gmt":"2017-01-12T08:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/?p=6756"},"modified":"2017-01-12T08:50:52","modified_gmt":"2017-01-12T08:50:52","slug":"is-alzheimers-disease-a-diabetic-disorder-of-the-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/fr\/2017\/01\/is-alzheimers-disease-a-diabetic-disorder-of-the-brain\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Alzheimer\u2019s Disease a Diabetic Disorder of the Brain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have found a potentially promising treatment for Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease, by noticing a similarity in the way insulin signaling works in the brain and in the pancreas of diabetic patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0In the pancreas, the Kir6.2 channel blockade increases the insulin signaling, and insulin signaling decreases the blood glucose levels,\u00a0\u00bb says Dr. Shigeki Moriguchi, one of the authors of the paper. \u00ab\u00a0In the brain, insulin signaling increases the acquisition of memory through CaM kinase II activation by Kir6.2 channel blockade.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>The research group concluded that Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease can be described as a \u2018diabetic disorder\u2019 of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Memantine, a drug widely used to treat Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease, is a well-known inhibitor of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors that prevent excessive glutamate transmission in the brain.
