{"id":4104,"date":"2014-12-04T08:58:15","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T08:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/?p=4104"},"modified":"2014-12-08T16:00:49","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T16:00:49","slug":"neurodegenerative-disease-research-in-europe-gets-it-together-press-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/hu\/2014\/12\/neurodegenerative-disease-research-in-europe-gets-it-together-press-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Neurodegenerative disease research in Europe gets it together [press release]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">The EU Joint Programme &#8211; Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND) has announced a EUR\u00a030\u00a0million call for neurodegenerative disease research topped-up with EUR 10 million from the Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation of the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s are a truly global challenge.\u00a0 Most of these diseases remain incurable and are strongly linked with aging populations. Dementias alone affect more than 7 million people in Europe and their care is estimated to cost \u00a0EUR 130 billion a year. The challenge facing the world of diagnosing, treating and caring for people affected by neurodegenerative diseases is extremely daunting and no single country alone has the expertise or resources necessary to tackle all of the big questions in this area.<\/p>\n<p>JPND was established in 2009 to enable participating EU Member States to work together on the challenge of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer\u2019s. In the past five years, tremendous progress has been made by JPND in terms of increasing coordination, collaboration and alignment between national research programmes and projects related to neurodegenerative diseases.\u00a0 This has resulted in an unprecedented mobilization of human resources, actions, funding and awareness to tackle this problem which no country can address alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JPND have announced a major new cohesive action with the European Commission, entitled &#8216;JPcofuND&#8217;. The initiative expects to launch a joint transnational call for proposals in January 2015 aimed at supporting international research collaborations in three JPND priority areas:\u00a0 Longitudinal Cohorts, Animal and Cell Models, Risk and Protective Factors. This initiative will see more than EUR 30 million coming from the JPND member countries being made available, with an additional EUR 10\u00a0million European Commission \u201ctopping up\u201d fund. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Philippe Amouyel, Chair of the JPND Management Board<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cthis unique co-funded initiative further establishes concrete synergies with Horizon 2020 to address this global threat.Thisis a significant scale-up of implementation of the JPND research strategy, and a major step forward towards the realisation of a \u201cEuropean Research Area\u201d dedicated to neurodegenerative disease research &#8211; an issue central to the joint programming concept.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas said:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8222;The EU Joint Programming approach tackles some of the major challenges we face as a society. Thanks to this new co-funded initiative of JPND and the European Commission, top European researchers will be working together to help the millions of people who suffer from Alzheimer\u2019s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
