This study aims to examine whether providing family carers with training and support in behaviour management for dementia symptoms, enables them to improve their coping strategies, minimise behavioural symptoms and thus enhance well being in older people with dementia and their carers. A web-based training and decision support system will be developed to assist community practitioners (community mental health nurses) to support family caregivers at home. This system will include the complexity of bio-medical, social and environmental factors that need to be taken into account in behaviour management of dementia. In this study half of the community mental health teams, within which the practitioners are located, will receive the experimental intervention, i.e. the web-based training and decision support system, and half will act as the control. Clinical and quality of life outcomes of the family carers and people with dementia will be examined as well as cost effectiveness analyses. The second arm of this study aims to examine whether providing care home staff in residential and nursing homes with training and support in behaviour management for dementia symptoms, enables them to improve their coping strategies, minimise behavioural symptoms and thus enhance well being in older people with dementia. A web-based training and decision support system will be developed to assist care home staff to access knowledge and behaviour management support for a range of challenging behaviours. This system will include the complexity of bio-medical, social and environmental factors that need to be taken into account in behaviour management of dementia. In this study half of the homes will receive the experimental intervention, i.e. the web-based training and decision support system, and half will act as the control. Clinical and quality of life outcomes will be examined as well as cost effectiveness analyses.
