{"id":1802,"date":"2013-11-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/2013\/11\/eu-us-collaborative-study-identifies-11-new-loci-for-alzheimers\/"},"modified":"2014-09-22T09:14:44","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T09:14:44","slug":"eu-us-collaborative-study-identifies-11-new-loci-for-alzheimers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurodegenerationresearch.eu\/ro\/2013\/11\/eu-us-collaborative-study-identifies-11-new-loci-for-alzheimers\/","title":{"rendered":"EU-US collaborative study identifies 11 new loci for Alzheimer&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The largest international study ever conducted on Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, the I-GAP (International Genomics Alzheimer\u0092s Project) consortium has identified eleven new regions of the genome involved in the onset of the disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This&amp;nbsp;research gives an overview of the molecular mechanisms underlying the disease, opening up to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease.  <\/p>\n<p>These results, detailed in <link http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ng\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/ng.2802.html - external-link-new-window \"Opens external link in new window\">Nature Genetics<\/link>, could not have been obtained without this unique worldwide collaborative effort.  <\/p>\n<p>In addition to the well-established association at the APOE locus, they identified 19 genomic regions significantly associated with late-onset Alzheimer\u0092s disease, 11 of which are new susceptibility loci. Their findings reinforce pathways previously implicated in Alzheimer\u0092s disease pathology, including immune response, inflammation, cell migration and lipid transport pathways. They also suggest new candidate genes and pathways that may be involved in disease risk. <\/p>\n<p>These 11 new confirmed genes can open new avenues in the understanding of the occurrence of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. Thus one of the most significant associations were found in the region HLA-DRB5\/DRB1 major histocompatibility complex. This finding is interesting in several ways. First, it confirms the involvement of the immune system in disease.
