    Research Abstract

The most common form of dementia, late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), is strongly associated with cardiovascular and metabolic factors, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and type 2 diabetes. On a molecular level, how cardiovascular and metabolic factors contribute to development of neurodegeneration is still poorly understood. We have identified a potential molecular factor linking the cardiovascular and neuronal aspects of AD pathobiology. Here, we propose a comprehensive study combining in vitro, animal and human sample studies to address the role of the vasoactive peptide CF6 as a modulator of neuronal physiology and risk factor of AD. This study will provide novel mechanistic insight how cardiovascular factors are linked to neurodegeneration on a molecular level. The results of the proposed work are expected to pave new ways for diagnosis and treatment of late-life dementia, which is increasingly associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
