Over the past 20 years the multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional group of studies now called The Cognitive
Function and Ageing Studies have provided a platform for a variety of types of research ranging from descriptive
epidemiology to detailed molecular mechanisms. Their strength has been their ability to translate across
disciplines and to provide a population based perspective on current advances. Embedded within this
programme has been a training ethos and the study has supported a wide range of postdoctoral research
projects based at different institutions. We propose to formalise this through the welcome initiative from the
Alzheimer’s Society and to increase capacity in multidisciplinary research related to dementia. The model is that
individual institutions would host projects but that these particular projects would have transdisciplinary elements
which drew in the distributed expertise from across the CFAS collaborative network. We have a proven track
record with such doctoral studies which have already increased capacity in dementia research across the
country.
