    Research Abstract

The overall aim of the Stem Cell Research Centre is to use stem cell models to identify new potential drug treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. To do so, we will focus on using stem cell models of Alzheimer’s disease to understand key mechanisms underpinning how the disease starts and spreads through the brain in both the inherited and the common, sporadic form of Alzheimer’s. A core element of the Centre is to find out how different genes that are known to affect the likelihood of getting Alzheimer’s disease actually work to do so. Ultimately, the combination of our increased understanding of how Alzheimer’s disease affects human nerve cells and the capacity to investigate new approaches to treating the disease will make a landmark contribution to the development of drugs to manage this disease.
