Alzheimer's disease & other dementias
The overall aim of the Stem Cell Research Centre is to use stem cell models to identify new potential drug treatments for Alzheimers disease. To do so, we will focus on using stem cell models of Alzheimers disease to understand key mechanisms underpinning how the disease starts and spreads through the brain in both the inherited and the common, sporadic form of Alzheimers. A core element of the Centre is to find out how different genes that are known to affect the likelihood of getting Alzheimers disease actually work to do so. Ultimately, the combination of our increased understanding of how Alzheimers disease affects human nerve cells and the capacity to investigate new approaches to treating the disease will make a landmark contribution to the development of drugs to manage this disease.
