    Research Abstract

With the aging of populations, preventing dementia is becoming a public health priority. The first aim of this project is to study which factors influence adopting healthy lifestyles, and how to sustain lifestyle changes over longer time. This will be done by pooled analysis from three ongoing European dementia prevention trials (FINGER, PreDIVA, MAPT). Second aim is to assess long-term effects of an intensive 2-year multidomain lifestyle intervention followed by a sustenance phase in the 7-year extended follow-up of the Finnish Geriatric Intervention study to prevent cognitive impairment and disability (FINGER). We will study the effect of intervention on the incidence of dementia/AD, and on several other health outcomes, and we will also investigate the underlying disease mechanisms. The project will provide recommendations on healthy lifestyle for preventing cognitive decline and disability. Such recommendations are urgently needed for health education and planning services.
