Empowering people with dementia: green care farms as an alternative to traditional dementia care environments.

In these models, radical changes, compared to traditional care models, are implemented in the physical, social and organizational environment. Green care farms are an innovative example of day-care, respite care and 24-hour nursing care, combining agricultural activities with care services in a homelike environment. Here, staff encourages people with dementia to participate in activities, tailored to individual needs and focusing on empowerment and building on the capacities they still have. First positive effects of green care farms are suggested for social engagement and involvement in meaningful and personcentered activities. This project will investigate how successful elements from the physical, social and organizational environment of green care farms empower people with dementia and whether they can be implemented in other dementia care environments. Furthermore, it explores which competencies professional caregivers need to optimally address social engagement, autonomy and remaining capacities of people with dementia. The project builds on data from two large-scale studies on green care farming. In addition, interviews with health care professionals and workshops with key stakeholders (e.g. health care professionals, people with dementia and their family caregivers, green care farmers, policymakers, health insurers) will be organized.
