Research Abstract


With this application we seek support for the FAS center, KI-SU ARC (Karolinska Institutet–Stockholm University Aging Research Center), established by a FAS grant (2000-07) as a collaboration between KI and SU. Primary goals of ARC are to a) carry out high-quality research; b) advance multidisciplinary efforts in aging research; c) develop links between available population studies and registries; d) offer graduate and postgraduate students a high-quality education; e) foster collaboration with aging researchers in Sweden and abroad; and f) direct the acquired knowledge into interventions and policy.
ARC is a multidisciplinary center where researchers from different disciplines (sociology, psychology, and medicine) share premises with the Stockholm Gerontology Research Center. This facilitates both the study of complex aging processes from different perspectives and the dispersion of research results into care and policy. Two themes underlie our work: the enormous heterogeneity in the elderly population and the individual–environment interface.
ARC is well known nationally and internationally for its research in health trends and inequalities, dementia prevention and brain aging. The requested grant will secure the continuation and the expansion of the center by implementing 13 new projects. Five projects will extend the research on social and public health aspects of human aging by adopting a life course approach and an integrated perspective on care, treatment and health economics; three projects will deepen current research by exploring new hypotheses regarding health inequalities and population health trends; and five projects will strengthen our current work on brain aging by developing new research agendas and implementing intervention studies.
By achieving the major aims of this application, ARC will continue to grow as a leading research center and play an important role as coordinator and promoter of a new generation of scholars in human aging research.
