This proposal describes a research project within the field of Alzheimers disease (AD) biology. The scientific purpose of the project is to elucidate the mechanisms by which toxic protein aggregates involved in development of AD may damage neurons and to characterize the cellular targets for this toxicity. The proposal aims to integrate competence within physical chemistry and nanotechnology at Chalmers with expertise in structural biology and biomedicine at the universities in Uppsala into an interdisciplinary collaboration. One main purpose of the project is to offer academic qualification to Dr. Elin Esbjörner (EE) and the aim is that she will obtain experience as a research leader by being responsible to manage and coordinate the collaborative activities at the two research sites but also, importantly, gain knowledge and experience within the biomedical field and within structural biology from working in the Uppsala environment and that this will broaden her competence and strategic profile at Chalmers and thereby support her future career.
