    Summary

Microglia, isolated from post mortem human brain (obtained from the Netherlands Brain Bank) , are used to compare effects of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and fronto-temporal dementia specific misfolded proteins on inflammasome activation, and to study mechanisms of activation and effects of potential therapeutics. Although culturing protocols are estabished, supply of tissue is a limiting factor, as are the relative low yield in cells and the fact that microglial cells have to be used within 10 days after isolation, and are vulnerable (transport/ cannot be stored frozen).
