Research Abstract


Binnen het project TOTALS zoeken we uit wat er in de motorische zenuwcellen misgaat door een mutatie op een ALS-gen. Om dit uit te zoeken kweken we in het lab zenuwcellen uit huidcellen van ALS-patiënten die een mutatie hebben in één van de ALS-genen. Deze gekweekte zenuwcellen zijn voor ons een ziektemodel, waarin we het ziekteproces kunnen bestuderen en nieuwe therapieën kunnen uitproberen. TOTALS richt zich dus op het vertalen van genetische defecten die worden gevonden in de patiënt naar ziektemechanismen en therapie.’ Within the TOTALS project we investigate what is happening in the motor nerve cells by a mutation on an ALS gene. To investigate this, we grow nerve cells from the skin cells of ALS patients in the lab that have a mutation in one of the ALS genes. These cultured nerve cells are a disease model for us, in which we can study the disease process and try out new therapies. TOTALS therefore focuses on the translation of genetic defects found in the patient for disease mechanisms and therapy. ‘
