    Research Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. In the Netherlands alone there are at least 260,000 people suffering from dementia. It is estimated that 1 in 5 people get into life with dementia. Disruptions in the brains of the “fat metabolism” can play an important role. The brains consist largely of “fats”. This fatigue attitude is very precisely regulated. Herein goes wrong, it can lead to more or less serious brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Earlier, we found it to be “fat” transport in the brains can be activated by specific pharmacological agents with beneficial effects on memory in mice studies. Unfortunately, the investigated artificial substances give serious side effects because they do not work specifically enough. This project examines whether specific regulation of the “fat metabolism” the neuropathological and functional disorders can prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Besides the University of Groningen also enter the University of Bonn, the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam and the University of Hasselt specific tests related to animal models for Alzheimer’s disease and measurements in the “fat metabolism” in this project.
