    Research Abstract

The signi?cance of maintaining mitochondrial integrity is underscored by various diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. This research proposal focuses on a recently discovered process of mitochondrial degradation taking place in the central nervous system. We aim to assess the role of astrocytes in degradation of neuron-derived mitochondria in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. A better understanding of the factors involved in this process may in the future lead to improved treatments for neurodegeneration and ways to increase health and longevity.
